Some Stadium with a Track, New York | Tuesday Afternoon
This...was bullshit.
Starlight was trying so hard to stay positive through all of this -- through the new...outfit, through the autographs, through pretending she cared at all who won in this whole A-Train vs. Shockwave RACE OF THE CENTURY!!! thing, but she was exhausted.
She'd been in New York, on the team, for two full weeks, and the only person she'd saved was an unauthorized victim, and it had nearly tanked her career. And now she'd been sitting here all day while her ass went numb and Queen Maeve was down on the field talking about putting Supes in the armed forces (which was something Starlight had some very mixed feelings about!), and -- there was the sonic boom that let her know that Homelander had arrived, too.
She tried not to let her tiredness show on her face as she smiled at her latest fan, looping the G in Starlight in a long, swerving tail under the rest of her name. "Thank you for coming. It was so nice to meet you."
...but this latest fan might make things a little better. Maybe a little. Because in front of her was a girl who couldn't be older than eleven or so, wearing a Starlight costume. Not -- this thing she was wearing now, but her uniform.
"Aren't you cute!" she told the girl, perking right up as she pulled another poster in front of herself to sign for it.
"Is it okay if I get a selfie?" the girl asked excitedly, turning her phone over in her hands.
"Of course, honey," Starlight told her, pushing the poster across the table as she got up. "Here, take this." She crossed around in front of the table, and -- look, she couldn't help it, she kind of melted when she saw the whole effect of Little Starlight. "Look at you," she sighed, wrapping an arm around the girl's shoulder. "You really dress the part."
"It's your old uniform," the girl told her, "but I'm saving up for the new one!"
Starlight...couldn't come up with a response to that. At least not one that Ashley -- who was standing about six feet away -- wouldn't drag her into Stillwell's office over, if she heard. So she just smiled, leaning over as the girl held her phone out in front of her for the selfie.
And...okay, Starlight was just going to clasp a hand to her chest as she bent over to fit in frame. She could zip herself back up, she supposed, but that might just call more attention to things? But -- like, otherwise, this thing was going to be all cleavage, and -- ugh, she hated this stupid bodysuit --
"Hey Starlight!" A man's voice called out from the line of people still waiting for autographs. "Show us your tits!"
There were a few answering cat-calls as Starlight reared back in surprise, looking down at her young fan and back out into the crowd.
Who was she? No one had ever said anything like that to her before. Though, honestly, her body had never been quite so on display, either.
"Damn, baby," called another voice as she straightened up, "you look fine AF. Lean down a little bit more."
They could not talk to her like that. Like, she was not going to stand for that, and as Starlight took a step towards the crowd, she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey." Ashley was there and as nervous and yappy as a little dog, and Starlight was really starting to get sick of her. "You do not need to press your luck right now, right?"
And the worst part was that she was right.
"Kick my ass, Starlight!"
She closed her eyes, breathing in for a long moment before turning to the little girl again. "Hey, sweetie, you know what?" Starlight reached out to touch her shoulder. "Save your money. I like that one much better."
"Starlight," Ashley prompted, as the next fan stepped up and Starlight took a step away from the table.
"I need a minute," Starlight told her, shaking her head as she moved backstage. She had to just -- regroup, for a minute. Plus this was running later than she'd thought, and at the rate she was going, she was going to run late for date night.
And, like, she really needed date night, right now.
