Kleinfeld, Annie's Manhattan | Thursday Afternoon

Annie was trying to be more excited than nervous today, but no matter what, the two were kind of co-mingling anyway. She might -- hopefully? -- get her wedding dress today! And she'd be filming an episode of television in the process, but whatever, that was just work, right?

And she was bringing Diego's sister. And her Fandom friends. And Maeve.

It would be fine.

And if she kept saying it would be fine, then it would be!

In any case, they were here -- along with a film crew, a gal who was not being shy at all about touching up makeup, Annie's boss Ashley (and her ubiquitous clipboard), and a bridal consultant who seemed torn between being thrilled at her big break and also like she might throw up.

"Your dress," Annie offered when she had a moment to herself (though she was also wearing a fingertip-length veil that Ashley had dropped on her head before wandering off again), "doesn't have to be like one of these."

Just to say. Sparkles were optional, fabrics could be breathable, no one needed to be laced into anything (except maybe Annie.)

"That's very good," Rey said, eyeing the veil. "I also have no idea what it should look like."

"Your dress? Black, anything you like," Annie told her easily. "Summer's already told me hers is gonna have pockets, which I fully endorse."

So she could use them. Annie's dress would not have pockets. It was foretold.

"Mine can be kind of anything white, it seems like," she added, making an intimidated little face as she looked around. There were a lot of dresses here she did like -- but a lot that were simply just not her taste, too. No judgement!

"That can mean a lot of things," Rey said, not even knowing how many types of white there were. "Do you have an idea of what you want?"

"A slimmer silhouette," Annie told her immediately, gesturing in a fairly sheath-like pattern with her hands. "I just feel like too much dress is gonna kind of weigh me down, you know? And I also want straps, or sleeves."

Because if she wasn't weighed down by a dress, she also didn't want to spend all day yanking the bodice up self-consciously.

"Some of these dresses are very puffy," Rey said, looking around. "So I think that gives everyone something to work with."

Maybe? She had no idea. Coruscant had been less overwhelming than all the white.

"Some girls go, like, full princess for their wedding," Annie explained, trying not to make a little face and failing. "I don't really think that's what I want?"

It helped that, you know, wearing sparkles and tulle was already kind of her day job.

"I think I'm gonna wear one of these, though," she added, reaching up to touch the veil. "Not this one, specifically."

"You wear that down the aisle, right?" Rey checked.

She'd seen TV.

"Yeah, and if you're real old school, you wear it over your face," Annie shared, reaching up to flip a layer of the veil down over her face to demonstrate. "And the guy lifts it up to kiss you when you're pronounced man and wife."

She gave Rey a look. "We're not going that far."

Much like holding a whole mass and leaving obey in the vows, there were some traditions Annie was okay with not adhering to.

"Why not?" Rey asked, though again, she'd only ever seen weddings through the lens of Hollywood and therefore the veil mostly seemed to be there for drama.

"Because as much as I love him, I'm not some kind of prize to be revealed to Diego at the end of the ceremony," Annie told her, shaking her head with a little laugh. "There's a lot of kind of patriarchal bullshit tied up in weddings that we're avoiding. Like, my dad is also supposed to walk me down the aisle and 'give me away' to Diego. Which, like, first of all, I don't even know where my dad is so good luck with that." Not something she talked about a lot! And also not something she was especially happy about, when it came to the wedding, but that was neither here nor there. "But also 'cause I'm not property. I'm giving myself to Diego, you know?"

"All right, I never would have guessed it was supposed to mean that," Rey said, making a face. "I support you ditching all of that."

"But veil as an accessory? For sure," she declared, playing with the ends of the one she was wearing. "Probably a longer one. Ooh, or maybe a cape, depending on what kind of dress I go with. Bridal capes are kind of a trend right now."

Spoiler: it would be a veil, not a cape, in spite of how fitting a cape might have been.

"Capes are underutilized here," said Rey, a woman who hadn't even met Lando Calrissian yet. "Though I do like this. I don't know the difference between it and any of the others, but you look amazing in it."
