Kleinfeld, Annie's Manhattan | Thursday Afternoon

Annie was trying to be more excited than nervous today, but no matter what, the two were kind of co-mingling anyway. She might -- hopefully? -- get her wedding dress today! And she'd be filming an episode of television in the process, but whatever, that was just work, right?

And she was bringing Diego's sister. And her Fandom friends. And Maeve.

It would be fine.

And if she kept saying it would be fine, then it would be!

In any case, they were here -- along with a film crew, a gal who was not being shy at all about touching up makeup, Annie's boss Ashley (and her ubiquitous clipboard), and a bridal consultant who seemed torn between being thrilled at her big break and also like she might throw up.

"That sounds like him," Allison said, weirdly proud. Maybe one day he'd take her somewhere to beat up Nazis. That would be fun. "He's mentioned you too. He was kind of fanboying, if I'm honest."

"That's not a shock," Maeve replied, though she actually looked the tiniest bit...fond? about it. Diego fanboying was different to her than her legions of other fans, because he was the rare person who -- like Annie -- was actually allowed to know her a little. "I hear I need to arm-wrestle the Best Man. Starlight was -- you know, I'm not going to call it fangirling, exactly, but she clearly seemed to think it would be funny."

Annie was right, it would be.

"Oh, that would be amazing," Allison said with a laugh. "And Luther would be a gracious loser, I promise you."

She had no doubt in her mind Luther would lose. If not from Maeve actually being stronger than him, then from Luther being intimidated by a woman.

"And I promise not to actually break his arm, if this happens," Maeve replied with a wink. "Though from what I've gathered, that shouldn't be an issue."

Annie seemed like she was marrying into a fairly special family, and as much as she wanted to play Show Me Yours, I'll Show You Mine with Allison, it was also rude to ask someone you just met who hadn't come right out with it.

Look. Golden opportunities only fell into your lap so often, and Ashley hadn't gotten as far as she had without recognizing them.

"Let's get a camera over here," she called, gesturing to Maeve and Allison like they were props before actually smiling at the pair of them. "Starlight's future sister-in-law and Queen Maeve, what a shot. You two are perfection, don't change anything."

She turned to a PA, ticking thoughts off on her fingers while she dictated. "Throw it on Twitter and Insta ASAP -- #BehindtheScenes, #ProudLesbian, #BraveMaeve, #BlackLivesMatter, obviously." Because they did, okay. Ashley's Insta feed was basically constant black boxes!

Allison had told herself she would be a pleasant human being today, but that had her resolve waivering. Her eyebrows shot up into her hairline and she gave Maeve a look as if to say 'is this for fucking real?'"

Unfortunately, Allison, it was.

"#ProudBisexualWoman apparently doesn't trend as well," Maeve replied, dry and clearly just resigned as she gave Allison a tired, humorless smile before flicking her gaze back to Ashley. "Ash, can we do pictures later? This is supposed to be about Starlight, anyway."

Ashley, unsurprisingly, did not pay literally any attention to Her Majesty except to reply, "And you're her friends, so."

So it was justified. All of it. Any corporate exploitation she wanted! #Friendship and #Sisterhood and #Feminism while they were at it!

Yeah. okay, that was enough of whatever the hell this was. Allison had been recently dealing with racism in 1963, so the faux wokeness that was happening right now was...new and very irritating. She was not a prop, okay? And neither was Maeve, clearly. She looked like she could punch someone's head off.

She knew Diego told her to keep a low profile, but a suggestion was low profile, right? Just a nice, friendly suggestion. Using her powers. "I heard a rumor you had somewhere else to be."

Ashley's eyes glazed over white for a half second, before she was turning to that same PA. "You know what, fuck that. We need to focus on A-Train. You know where that asshole just called me from?"

She turned away from Allison and Maeve without a second glance, and even started hustling towards the door. Clearly she had much more important places to be.

Holy shit, Maeve may have just fallen in love, right then. Allison was, at least, getting a very impressed look, because that was way the fuck cooler than Diego's knife tricks (even if, you know, she was still very proud of him for Stormfront blah blah blah rah rah she thought your fiancé was great, Starlight, whatever.)

"No fucking way," she said softly. "Oh, I like you."

"I'm just sorry you have to deal with that on the regular," Allison said with a wry smile. "Let's keep this between us. I told Diego I'd keep a low profile."

And it was still low! Kind of.

Lower than the profile Maeve kept when she got pissed and used her powers, anyway. Lot less table-throwing.

"Sure, sure, but I'm gonna need your number," Maeve replied, only half-joking. "That is handy."

She kind of wondered if it would work on Homelander. Maeve had heard a rumor he went to live in Antarctica, maybe. (But that felt like a real monkey's paw situation waiting to happen, didn't it?)
